Take Shimano, for example. Whenever the Japanese giant brings out a new version of the Tiagra groupset it tends to bear an uncanny likeness to the older version of the higher-end groupset. This means that some extraordinarily well-engineered and beautifully designed aluminium frames are now on sale at staggeringly low prices. That all combines to produce a great situation for the canny bike buyer: Boardman Road Sport Boardman is a brand well known for creating great-value road bikes. While Schwinn often had a reputation for building heavy bikes for kids, the Paramount line had a reputation for finely crafted, relatively light road bikes. That is obviously a great price. The very nice woman selling it was good natured about the low price.

This is a Malvern Star. The bike is a mid-level model that was meant to be fast and tough but not as pretty or as light as the flagship Five-Star model. The beautifully painted frame details appear to be the handiwork of Ken Dickie. Ken was an artist who lived in Melbourne and applied his brushwork to some of the coolest bicycles we have ever seen anywhere. Ken worked with a steady hand, a great eye for details and a tremendous amount of patience.

The Oppy, which was named after Hubert Opperman, was an improvement over the popular Cyclo standard derailleur of a few years earlier. It looks like we have a 3-speed freewheel mounted on the Malvern, so with a 15 to 17 tooth spread you would have had it easy compared to your single-speed riding partners….

The frame was free of rust, and in unusually nice condition for its age. I kept as much as I could of the original Dura Ace components, but I knew that I would replace the wheelset, not wanting to ride on 27 inch 20mm tubulars through downtown Portland. At first, I considered a b conversion as the best option for adapting this bike to my riding style.

Feeling an obligation to at least try to keep people riding bikes past their teenage years, Schwinn made adult bikes for a nearly nonexistant U.S. market during the bicycle bust decades of .

Hoping you make that WE all have great rides in The traffic on route moves ridiculously fast and touring with a bunch of stuff I am not up to that speed so I opted for walking along the absurdly narrow walkways which were covered in water, mud and other stuff oozing out of the tunnel walls. Anyway as you can imagine it was a pretty awful Km. Just might be good to highlight it to other readers who may not be familiar with the wormhole to hell experience.

However, using those characteristics can be horribly misleading. In other words, this article will act as a guide, rather than a map, revealing land marks, rather than sign posts. You might not find the correct house, but you will at least end up in the right neighbourhood. Let’s assume, for the moment, that cutting edge Velo technology is reserved for top of the line, or close to it, models.

And, let’s also assume that, sooner or later, the top end technology will trickle down to lesser steeds.

Wednesday, December 28, Dutch Bikes – Delivered? More Local Bike Shops are offering practical transportation bicycles with classic styling in North America every day. There are now many US brands that offer practical transportation bikes, but for some there is no substitute for an imported fully dressed Dutch Bike. Unfortunately most of us don’t live within driving distance of these shops. What if you could get Dutch Bikes delivered right to your door?

There’s great risk it buying a bicycle sight-unseen, but perhaps if you’ve had a chance to ride one elsewhere you’d be more willing to take the plunge. The best part is that they have a variety of sizes, styles and gearing combinations up to 8 speed. These bikes have all of the standard features like locks, lights, chaincase, steering stabilizer, racks, coatguards, etc; And Dutch assures me that these bikes include front brakes not shown in photos.

You can choose between a loop frame and diamond frame, with single speed or 3-speed gearing. In the diamond frame you can get any color and size you want as long as it’s black and 57cm. Dutchie bikes are equipped with dynohubs and front rim brakes. We can’t speak to the quality of these bikes, but maybe we can get some models to test and post a full review.

Generally the year and month of build was stamped as the first part of the serial number. The first number 6 relates to the year — It is assumed that the G is the production number. There were a few variations on this type of serial number, but usually they were pretty easy to work out.

All Re-Cycle bikes are fully tuned by our professional mechanics and completely ready to ride. Each bike comes with a 30 day guarantee. We have many more bikes than are posted on-line.

History[ edit ] According to Frank J. Raleigh America ordered 2, bicycles from Tano and Company of Osaka but their parent company in England, TI-Raleigh, disapproved — concerned that the Tano-built bikes were too well made and would have outsold their own British bikes. Raleigh’s sales agent, Mitchell Weiner, who was reading The New Centurions at the time, took receipt of the bikes, placed Centurion decals on the bikes and marketed them successfully, subsequently forming Western State Imports after merging with Rick Wilson’s company, Wil-Go of Santa Clara, California.

Cozy Yamakoshi served as the company’s product development manager, designing the bike’s frames, coordinating the manufacture of the bikes by Japanese manufacturers, and importing the bikes into the US. Early bike sales were limited to the West Coast, with the brand receiving wider exposure by the late s. WSI stopped using the Centurion brand name in , [4] consolidating their road and touring bikes under the Diamond Back later DiamondBack brand.

While the brand Centurion had become well known, under the new brand name the company’s market for road and touring bicycles soon evaporated. Early Diamond Back models ca. After Weiner died, the company continued its growth under the management of Mike Bobrick. The rights to the brand name Centurion were sold to Germany’s Wolfgang Renner in Renner had imported Centurion to Germany since , including made-extra models like the first German mountainbike “Country”.

Today, Centurion remains as a German brand with design and engineering in-house.

Sea to Summit in 27 hours Climbing Mt. Have you ever hallucinated that the clouds were transforming into giant stuffed animals and were coming to kill you? If so, then you can relate to the genuine terror I felt as this impossible event unfolded into reality right before my eyes. So, after climbing 12, ft in elevation over the past 27 hours without sleep, I guess I got what I deserved.

But it was worth it. Every year around , hikers climb Mt. Standing 12, ft tall, this is no small peak. However almost everyone climbs from the 5th station, located at ft in altitude. I had climbed from here twice before and thought I was pretty hardcore. Not only this, but that he had completed this route himself.

To be fair, we must also take a step back and understand that not everyone is in love with the idea of installing a kickstand on their bike. Some people who are particular about the objects they own are almost as passionate about protecting them as they would be a member of their own family.

Okay, well, that may be a bit of an exaggeration, but the point I’m trying to make is that for some, it makes little sense to buy an expensive object without an accessory to ensure its protection when you have to leave it somewhere.

Some bike parts have a date code cast or stamped into the piece. This clearly is when the component was made and not when the bike was made, but unless the component or bike manufacturer had lots of stock lying around in inventory, the date should be a fairly good indication of the year of the bike. At least it would be the earliest date that the bike could have been made. Of course, all this assumes the bike has the original component.

The most likely components to be original are the stem, handlebars, seatpost, and brakes. On a vintage bike in excellent condition that apparently had a lonely existence in a garage all of the components likely are original. As the wear on a vintage bike increases, the greater the likelihood components are not original, either through replacement of worn parts or through component swaps.

Swaps can take place early in the life of a bike as the proud new owner upgrades to new or used components of higher quality. Swaps also can be made as the bike falls out of favor, or is being sold, where the higher quality components are traded for lower quality ones that the owner had onhand. Don’t all cyclists have boxes and boxes of old components in their garage?

Most early Treks through about were sold as framesets. The components were added by the local bike shop or by the buyer. New components often were used. Components also could be swapped from an existing ride to the new frameset.
